Westell's UltraLine(TM) Series3 Wins CES Innovations Award

Residential Gateway recognized for innovation in Home Networking

AURORA, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Westell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WSTL) today announces that its UltraLine(TM) Series3 residential gateway has been named an International CES Innovations 2008 Design and Engineering Award honoree in the Home Networking product category. Sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the annual Innovations Design and Engineering Awards are judged by a panel of independent industrial designers, engineers, and trade press editors. The UltraLine(TM) Series3 won for its aesthetic design qualities, engineering innovation, uniqueness, and value to consumers.

Westell's UltraLine(TM) Series3 is a combined residential gateway and digital home controller that enables the delivery of a comprehensive set of broadband services including IPTV, media sharing, home security, remote access, and home energy management. The gateway features WireSpeed(TM) routing technology, including a dual-core network processor to support multiple bandwidth-intensive applications simultaneously.

The UltraLine(TM) Series3 is the first residential gateway to combine triple play home networking services with popular consumer applications that monitor and manage home systems. It unifies several disparate consumer systems - such as entertainment center components, home management devices, and home security systems - and integrates them into a single, consistent, and intuitive user experience. The user experience is flexible and can be accessed simultaneously on the TV, computer, smartphone, and any browser-capable device.

The UltraLine(TM) Series3 extends the notion of what a "home router" can do. For example, its home control feature automatically discovers networked lighting or appliances and allows the consumer to control their behavior in real-time or on a scheduled basis. It offers a unified view of plug-and-play IP cameras for home monitoring. By connecting a USB storage device with digital media, the UltraLine(TM) Series3 instantly makes the content available to DLNA / UPnP-compliant consumption devices such as digital media players, set-top boxes, and networked game consoles. The gateway aggregates and distributes on-line information and content to any home network device, enabling consumers to view on-line photos and user-generated video content on a TV. And it provides remote access into the home to retrieve data or media content and to control home devices from a web browser.

"The CEA and International CES are prestigious industry organizations and we are proud to be recognized for our technology innovation and excellence by the industry experts who judged the award competition," said Thomas E. Mader, Westell president and chief executive officer. "The Innovations Award validates our strategic initiative to expand into new markets. We look forward to launching the UltraLine(TM) Series3 and other cutting edge products into the consumer marketplace," he said.

Westell, a leading provider of convergence gateways and broadband access solutions, will demonstrate the digital home control application on the UltraLine(TM) Series3 at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), January 7 - 10, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The UltraLine(TM) Series3 will also be on display in the Innovations Design and Engineering Awards Showcase at the Sands Expo and Convention Center during International CES.
